Juice Diet Claims To Cut 21 Pounds

Orlando 2Darlene Dunn, Staff writer

The cartoon character Popeye was known for ingesting a can of spinach and instantaneously gaining strength.

James Hester compares Popeye’s results to what he feels after following the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.

“You think better, you feel better, you look better,” said Hester, co-author of “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.” Roni DeLuz, co-author and naturopathic doctor and registered nurse, developed the diet, which she allows the digestive system to rest and repair itself because there is not any chewing of food involved.

Hester said the plan is designed to rid the body and bloodstream of toxins, which leads to better health, such as greater mental clarity, a reduction in cellulite, fewer headaches and backaches, less arthritis, joint pain, fewer symptoms of PMS and a stronger immune system. The diet will also lead to weight loss.

Enzyme Drinks, Teas Allowed

he meals on the detoxification program consist of enzyme-rich drinks, herbal teas, aloe vera, vegetable purees, “live” juices, homemade soups and plenty of water. “Live” juices are juices made using a juicer.
Salt, sugar, milk, eggs, butter and alcoholic beverages, including wine, are excluded while following the detox.
The detox, also recommends enemas; kidney, gallbladder and liver flushes; lymphatic drainage massages; sauna treatments; detoxifying baths; cellulite treatments and walking at a leisurely pace or using a Chi machine. It also suggests brushing dry skin before showers.

The detox can also be performed for seven days and two days, but a 21-pound weight loss will not be achieved. There are other benefits, the authors said.

The weekend detox helps you improve your appearance and energy level quickly. Your eyes and skin will brighten; your thoughts will be clearer; you’ll feel less stressed out, frustrated and angry,” the book says.

In addition to the physical health benefits, there are also emotional health benefits.

In fact, the book describes how depression is often relieved after detoxing. People feel calmer, happier and more optimistic, the authors say.

“Do the detox for health reasons not vanity reasons, and you’ll lose the 21 pounds,” said Hester who follows the program several times a year.

Cleansing The Colon

Tsila Trager, a certified colon hydrotherapist, believes that it is important to rid the body of toxins and waste to achieve optimal health.

While colonics help, she cautions that the results on the diet vary.

However, she believes that enemas help people feel better and lose weight.

She added that there is about “10 to 15 pounds of fecal matter just sitting there,” because many people consume food without drinking enough water to help with bowel movements.

Where’s The Protein?

Many health care professionals have criticized the detox diet because of the lack of protein, fat and fiber, as well as the speedy weight loss.

Kathlee Zelman, a WebMD expert, reviewed the diet. She wrote that “while the plan may sound like a scientific approach to weight loss, it lacks the fundamentals that dietitians, doctors, and health authorities know are essential for good health.”

Hester believes that critics lack discipline and have likely not tried the diet.

“I don’t think you should criticize something until you do it,” he said. “After doing it, you can make an intelligent decision about whether it is good for you.”

Hester added that if someone fears the lack of protein in their diet, protein shakes can be added. This will allow the body to detox without the 21-pound weight loss, however.

Other health professionals criticize the Detox Diet because they believe that followers may lose muscle mass.
“You have to burn off the fat before you start burning muscle and most people I know have to burn a lot of fat before getting to the muscle,” Hester said.

Do You Maintain Weight?

After the 21st day, there is a maintenance diet that should be followed. It includes slowly reintroducing food groups to your diet. The maintenance diet includes steamed vegetables, chicken and other organic foods, and several ounces of water.
Hester said that DeLuz’s philosophy is if you do 75 percent what she says and eat 25 percent recreational food, you will maintain the weight loss.

A person’s attitude will determine the success of the detoxifying program, he said.
“You have to ask yourself if you are out of control (with eating and drinking),” Hester said. “Some people don’t want to change.”

A suggested schedule on the 21-Day Detox Diet would include:

Diet book turns into a big gain for ex-paperboy

North Jersey RecordWednesday, January 9, 2008

WHO: James Hester and Roni DeLuz.

WHAT: Book signing for “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.”

WHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday.

WHERE: Barnes & Noble, The Shops at Riverside, Hackensack Avenue at Route 4, Hackensack; 201-488-8037.

His aunt still lives on Columbus Avenue, the Little Ferry road where 9-year-old James Hester delivered copies of The Record to earn spending money. Company policy, according to Hester, required each paperboy to be at least 11 years old.

“Are you 11?” his boss asked.

Hester fibbed, a white lie that allowed him to sling papers at porches and collect money.

“The winter was hard,” Hester said during a recent phone interview. “The winter Sunday mornings. … Sunday you had to do the insert.”

All these years later, that paperboy from Little Ferry has a best-selling book on his hands. Hester teamed with Roni DeLuz to write “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.” The book became a bestseller last year after Howard Stern sidekick Robin Quivers tried the diet and began discussing it on the air. Not long after that, Hester found his book chasing the latest Harry Potter tale.

“It really heals you,” Hester said. “It really gets all the dirt out of your body. It’s not only for weight loss, it’s for health reasons.”

The seeds for the book took root in 2003. Hester had ballooned to 213 pounds. A friend’s kids began ribbing Hester for the extra weight he was carrying. He decided to enroll in DeLuz’s program on Martha’s Vineyard.

“On the third day, I truly heard God speak to me,” Hester said. “He said, ‘I’m going to heal you, and I’m going to change your life. You’re going to be in a different direction, but you have to share my healing that I’m going to give to you with other people.’

“So I turn to [DeLuz] and I say, ‘Do you want to do a book?’ ” Hester said. “You could just see her eyes lit up, like she was dying to do a book.”

Thirty-nine publishers turned down the proposal, according to Hester. He networked his way to a meeting with Judith Regan while she was still at HarperCollins. He was able to sell his pitch the same way he used to sell subscriptions to his neighbors who hadn’t been getting the paper.

“He became friends with everybody on his paper route,” said Ann Darata, Hester’s aunt. “It probably took him twice as long because he stopped to talk to everybody.”

Not everyone offered a positive review. On CBS News’ Web site, dietitian Keri Glassman used the book as an example of a fad diet. She said it uses the laxative method — more trips to the bathroom — to achieve its results.

“This is not a lasting form of weight loss,” Glassman wrote. “You lose nutrients, and when you’ve finally decided you’ve had enough of this diet, you’ll want to overeat to make up for the deprivation you have caused yourself.”

But Hester vehemently defends DeLuz’s program and lashed out at his critics.

“Seriously, their stomachs are over their belts. And they use their expense accounts to go to expensive French restaurants with thick, creamy sauces,” Hester said. “And these are the people that are giving other people who want to change their life advice.”

He points to his own body — the 180-pound version of himself — as an example.

“I lost 21 pounds in 21 days,” Hester said. “I look like a million bucks. My hair stopped falling out. My triple chin is now back to normal. It’s like I had a face-lift. My stuffing that was hanging over my pants is almost flat … My thinking is clear. My mind is sharp.”

Stay in one of the six suites, give up solid foods in favor of berry “cocktails” and other organic blends and immerse yourself in cleansing therapies like hypnosis and colonics.

Go wild: Drinking alcohol and smoking are forbidden during detox, but who says you can’t just have one teeny little sip of a drink at the Offshore Ale microbrewery? Staff will serve up samples on request.

Chat with Roni DeLuz

Boston GlobeMay 3, 2007

Roni DeLuz is the creator of the Martha’s Vineyard detox diet. She recently chatted with Boston.com readers about the weight loss plan.

Mac__Guest_: What is this diet and how does it work???
Roni_DeLuz: Hi This is Roni
Roni_DeLuz: The diet detox is about cleansing your system of everyday toxic substances. Itbgives your body a chance to rest by giving your body maximun nutrition in small doses. Ror example you will receive powerful vitamins and minerals in one glass of juice, this will allow your body to be nourished and then your body will not be afraid to release fat and toxins.
chipperu2:

Hi Roni: Thanks for chatting! I get the detox, cleansing part of the diet, but why no chewing?

Roni_DeLuz: Hi
Roni_DeLuz: The reason no chewing is important,
Roni_DeLuz: It is a cleanse, or a detox or fast, the body will rest from digesting and all the vital power or energy will go to healing and releasing of fat, You will recieve more vital power or energy when you stop chewing

chewforthought__Guest_: hi and thanks for chatting! i am curious about the toxicity of the american diet today. why are people living longer than ever if their diet is so toxic? what do you consider the most toxic foods and why? thanks for your time!

Roni_DeLuz: Hi
Roni_DeLuz: yes We are living longer and we are sicker, The quality of our living is poor. I believe some of the most toxic substances is in our live everyday is too much sugar, too much salt, too much perservatives and rancid oils

Shween-o__Guest_: hi there, this sounds cool - what sort of nutrients are in the frappes to sustain the body without solid food for 21 days?

Roni_DeLuz: Hi this is a great question
Roni_DeLuz: In one glass of Green juice you will receive the nutients of 5-6 servings of vegetables and fruits.

gina__Guest_: Hi Roni, is your book for sale right now and if so, where would I purchase it?

Roni_DeLuz: you can pre order on amazon and in barnes and nobles may 8

GinaBabe3__Guest_: Hi all! What do I need to get started? Do I need to get a juicer?
Roni_DeLuz: go to mvdietdetox.com

Disbeliever__Guest_: If it’s a FAST, wouldn’t that mean you dont’ eat anything?

Roni_DeLuz: this is not a fast–it’s a cleanse.. you feed your body every two hours…good tasting liquids…except for soups.. www.mvdietdetox.com

cuddlytigger__Guest_: can you tell me a little bit about your diet program

Roni_DeLuz: www.mvdietdetox.com—-

Nantucket_Diet__Guest_: Out of 100 people, how many people are capable of doing that diet for 21 days ? 1, maybe 2 ?

Roni_DeLuz: ninety percent. if you are an emotional eater you will have a harder time.. 3 retired school teachers in their 70’s just completed.. if they can do it anyone can.

k_2__Guest_: everytime i try to lose weight i always end up being hungry. i’m a pretty healthy eater (lots of fruits and veggies, rarely fried although i do have a sweet tooth).

Roni_DeLuz: get rid of the sugar and do the detox your body will love you.. don’t strave yourself … feef your body every 2 hours.

k_2__Guest_: i just have a hearty appetite (for a girl)! does this diet leave you feeling hungry?

Roni_DeLuz: not if you feed your body every two hours ..like the programs suggest.. go to www.mvdietdetox.com

Fatty_21__Guest_: what is a rancid oil?? hydrogenated?

Roni_DeLuz: www.mvdietdetox.com

k_2__Guest_: will the diet work if you “cheat”

Roni_DeLuz: not at 100% you want to give your digestive system a rest

Disbeliever__Guest_: You said above “It is a cleanse, or a detox or fast,” - so which is it?

Roni_DeLuz: detox—cleanse

GinaBabe3__Guest_: Do women tend to lose less weight in 21 days than men?

Roni_DeLuz: sometimes.. depending on your cycle etc…

urious32__Guest_: Where can I find this book?

Roni_DeLuz: pre order amazon.com barnes and nobles may 8

jules__Guest_: what do I do after the 21 days? How do I maintain the weight lost?

Roni_DeLuz: you start your diet on the 22nd day.. slowly introduce healthy food and protein…

Shween-o__Guest_: is it safe to lose 21 lbs in 21 days?

Roni_DeLuz: sure–your body will only allow you to lose what it needs to lose..

guest1__Guest_: Roni, what are your credentials?

Roni_DeLuz: RN, ND, PhD in Natural Healing…

Freckled: Isn’t most of the weight loss just water weight? Won’t I just re-gain after the 21 days are over?

Roni_DeLuz: If you have a lot of water weight Then yes. Otherwise you will not gain your weight back if you change your lifestyle to a healhier way of living…
dekker0023__Guest_: What impact would continuing to drink coffee (without sugar) have as far as weight loss is concerned? Thanks in advance!

Roni_DeLuz: Coffee is an herb and it not bad.. we just abuse it…and become addicted to it

BWell__Guest_: Is there excercise involved too?

Roni_DeLuz: Light walking and yoga… no cardio or heavy weights

guest1__Guest_: I thought this was a CHAT…. you are answering every question with a link to your website.

Roni_DeLuz: sorry what is your question?

PJ__Guest_: Is there any independent review of your detox?

Roni_DeLuz: Dr. Alberto Martinez MD wrote the introduction to my book … and he went throught the 21 day program.. it changed his life….

k_2__Guest_: like dinner for a special occasion, etc.

Roni_DeLuz: Don’t understand…
Roni_DeLuz: Sorry I have to go I’m taping Inside Edition.. May you all have a blessed and healthy journey. If you choose to give your body this gift. Please keep us posted via my website. www.mvdietdetox.com

But Roni DeLuz, a registered nurse, naturopathic doctor and founder of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat, has found a way to combine the best of the Vineyard with healthy living and eating. Written with James Hester, a former record company executive who now works with DeLuz, “21 Pounds in 21 Days” takes readers on a journey to understand foods and the ways we process them, using the life experiences of real people to illustrate changes we all can make for better health.

NY mom offers daughter an unusual approach to dieting

New York Daily NewsBY PATRICK HUGUENIN
Sunday, September 30th 2007

New York Times bestseller, 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox. Our youngest detoxer has successfully completed and her story is featured in Sunday’s New York Daily News. She shares her story about obesity in teenagers and how to lose weight the healthy way.. Our oldest is 80 years old and she would like to share her story with the seniors….

21 Pounds in 21 DaysAlly Shapiro, who underwent a week-long Martha’s Vineyard Diet treatment, is determined to avoid junk food.
Fourteen-year-old Shapiro with her mother, Jill Zarin.

Ally Shapiro, 14, isn’t the kind of teenager you expect to find in a detox center.
She’s not partying like Lindsay Lohan or pill-popping and hitting the freeway like Nicole Richie. But, in August, facing another year of cafeteria food at her upper East Side high school, Shapiro decided it was time for gastrointestinal rehab.
“A lot of my friends thought I was crazy,” says Shapiro. “When I said ‘detox,’ they thought I meant drugs and alcohol and I had to make them understand that I was detoxing food.”

The program of choice was naturopathic healer Roni DeLuz’s all-liquid all-vegetable diet, popularized in her bestseller book “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox,” co-authored with James Hester.
The plan not only flushes toxins from the body, it sheds pounds - and fast.

“This wasn’t about weight,” says Jill Zarin, Shapiro’s mom. “That was just a by-product. It’s about eating better. If you talk to people who do yoga and have a healthy life, they detox once a year. Allison wanted to erase the blackboard, to detox her body and start over.”

Though she’s already a trim teen, Shapiro admits the start of school comes with scrutiny. Plus, she’s spending sophomore year in front of TV cameras. Zarin is one of the subjects of a reality TV show coming to Bravo titled “Manhattan Moms.”
In late August, Shapiro jetted to Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, where for one week all she would eat - or rather, sip - were half a dozen high-nutrient low-cal vegetable drinks per day, one every two hours.

“For a 14-year-old not to chew for a week,” says Hester, “that’s big.”

“Breakfast” consisted of an antioxidant berry drink and tea, followed by more tea midmorning with one of many “green drinks,” concentrated helpings of leafy vegetables plus Spirulina and blue-green algae, packaged and sold in health food stores.

Shapiro quickly discovered that when it came to food, the bare minimum wasn’t so bad - at least for seven days.
“The first day, I was hungry,” Shapiro says. “The second day, I had some cravings - not candy, but sweet things like strawberries and apples, something for sugar. On day three, I woke up and I didn’t really care.”

Though the detox can be performed at home, Shapiro’s time on the Vineyard included spa treatments such as naps in a detoxing sweat bed called the Alpha Spa. She also cooled her heels in a foot bath rigged with an electrical current that is supposed to draw toxins out through the feet.

“The first day I did it,” says Shapiro, “the water was completely black by the end.”

By day three, 20 minutes in the foot bath generated a copper-colored sludge - the color of the flushed buildup from her joints related to arthritis, DeLuz explained.

As a detoxer’s cells get the nutrients they need, but nothing extra, they dump toxins - such as cholesterol, hard minerals, insecticides and food additives - into the blood stream to be flushed away.

21 Pounds in 21 DaysThe dump causes what’s known as a “healing crisis,” which in Shapiro’s case meant a night of flu-like symptoms that meant the diet was doing its work.

“She called me and said, ‘You read the book! Why didn’t you tell me this was going to happen?’” says Zarin. “But then she started to feel better.”

By the end of her seven days, Shapiro had dropped 11 pounds and she had changed her outlook on mealtime.

“Last year, the lunch food was horrible,” she says, “and you ended up waiting until 4 o’clock to eat a whole sandwich, Coke, chips and then a big dinner. … I’m starting to feel better. At home, eating all that junk, I just wanted it all out.”

She plans to stick to the berry drinks and vegetable soup dinners, but she’ll be eating lunch with her friends - and maybe even convince them to go in for detox themselves.

“I hope when I go home,” says Shapiro, “they’ll see the results and trust me.”

Congratulations on taking your first step to a complete wellness and weight loss program! The
Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox formula is meticulously structured to enhance your wellness
through detoxification and cleansing to ensure a fast and safe weight loss.

We have all skipped breakfast when we’re running late or missed lunch during a deadline-heavy
workday. But would you give up food to improve your health and well being. In fact, that’s
exactly what a lot of people are doing these days. “Detox” diets (also known as cleansing, fasting
or juice fasting), are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your
energy and get yourself on the wellness track.

The idea behind The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox is the belief that foods we eat (along with
coffee, tea and alcohol we drink, the air we breath, and the tobacco we smoke) contain harmful
and toxic substances, which accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way.
The principle behind body detoxification is simple. When we eat, the body uses a tremendous
amount of energy to process and break down the food through the digestive system. When we
stop eating, and exchange food with detoxification cocktails, all the energy that previously went
into the digestive process now goes towards healing and cleansing.

The focus of Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox is to provide maximum nutrition in small doses
throughout the day. You will feed your body to create healthy cells while shrinking your body by
eliminating waste. Once you feed your body high nutrition and at the same time eliminate waste,
your body will begin to shrink.

Advocates who have gone through the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox say that it jumpstarted
their body’s own detoxification process, clearing their skin, boosting their energy, taking away
minor aches and pains, improving their digestion and liver function. You’ll feel lighter, elated,
cleaner and your skin will look fantastic.

And, since one of the end results is weight loss, detoxing is now attracting dieters in large
numbers. The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox works both as a motivator and catalyst for making
the commitment to dietary and overall lifestyle changes.

In the next part of this document you will find the daily schedule and the supplement that you
will need to order. You should follow this protocol for 21 days. Congratulations and welcome
to the world of Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.

Rush and Molloy

New York Daily NewsLots of Democratic lawmakers turned out for Wednesday’s D.C. premiere of Michael Moore’s “Sicko” - but not one of the invited Republicans. Sen. Frank Lautenberg and almost 20 congressmen (including White House hopeful Dennis Kucinich), former Defense Secretary William Cohen, AOL co-founder Steve Case and producer George Stevens Jr. congratulated Moore, who, by the way, is determined to slim down. He just got a copy of “The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.”

Ironically, her books are still bringing Murdoch profits with “The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox” by Dr. Roni DeLuz and James Hester hitting No. 2 on Amazon, behind a little book called “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” And “Outrage,” by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann, is No. 5 on The New York Times’ best-seller list.

Diet book debuts No. 3

Boston GlobeWe hear “21 Pounds in 21 Days,” the Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox book by Roni DeLuz and James Hester, is debuting at No. 3 on the New York Times bestseller list in the advice and how-to category.

Quivers’ diet team ensures Robin eats like a bird

New York Daily Newsby Rush & Molloy
Robin Quivers should be perkier than usual on Howard Stern’s show this morning: She got a colonic yesterday. It’s all part of the immersion of Stern’s Sirius sidekick in Dr. Roni DeLuz’s book, ‘21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.’ So far, she’s lost 16 pounds in 12 days. DeLuz and co-author James Hester have actually moved in with Quivers, and it sounds as if it’s harder on them.

‘Robin gets up at 2:45 in the morning, so we all do,’ says Hester. ‘By 3:15, we’re in the car. At 6 a.m., Robin gets her first supplement, a berry drink. At 8 a.m., she gets her green drink; at 10 a.m., a lemon drink. At noon, she gets a juice made of spinach, chard, ginger, collard and cucumber, and at 4 o’clock she gets a puree of broccoli, cauliflower, yams, garlic and spinach.’ Presumably, at 5 o’clock she gets a medal.

Says Hester: ‘Then she rides her bike, and later, we wrap her up in infrared pads and a sheet and she bakes under the blankets for about an hour and she’s asleep by 7 p.m.’

P.S.: The colonic was given by Yoko Ono ’s assistant-turned-colon-cleanser Philomena, who was probably inspired to go into her new line of work by working for the lovely, the talented, Ono.

Stern sidekick takes up on-air detox diet

Boston GlobeJune 2007
We expect Howard Stern and sidekick Robin Quivers to discuss body functions on their satellite radio show. But expect to hear even more now that Quivers is undergoing a 21-day detox diet on-air with help from Roni DeLuz and James Hester. DeLuz & Hester, who wrote “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox,” is staying in Quivers’s apartment and keeping her strictly to juices, purees, and teas — nothing that requires chewing. “Howard keeps asking us questions about exactly what’s going to happen to Robin and what’s going to come out of her,” says Hester, who did the detox himself . “We’re here for the whole thing,” Hester promised. “She’s going to do this.”

The 2-day refresher

Detriot NewsKimberly Hayes Taylor / The Detroit News

How to cleanse your body by pumping it full of nutrition

You hit the snooze button once or twice before rising. You feel like you need a nap in the middle of your work day, and you’re too tired to work out.

It’s probably time to detoxify your body. You can begin this weekend with a two-day detox, says Roni DeLuz, founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.

DeLuz says it’s simple to tell if your body needs a detox: You have darkness or puffiness under your eyes, your belly protrudes, you’re bloated and gassy, and always burping.

“I always tell people you can cleanse even if it’s for one day,” says DeLuz, author of “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox,” (Collins, $24.95). “Anytime you put maximum nutrition in your body, it does a lot of good.”

The detox requires drinking distilled water, herbal tea and other drinks every two hours. You’ll chew nothing for two days, and DeLuz, also a naturopathic doctor, registered nurse and colon therapist, promises you won’t get hungry. During the weekend, she also suggests scheduling a colonic.

Here’s how to get going ( the glossary, at right, will explain what these supplements are and where you can get them):

  • Breakfast:1. Start with an antioxidant berry drink that can be purchased at a health food store. Don’t add sugar, salt or preservatives.2. Follow with an herbal cleansing formula to flush the liver, kidney and colon. Shop for a formula with herbs such as cayenne pepper, dandelion root, burdock root and cascara sagrada.3. Drink a cup of hot herbal tea, sans caffeine, and 8 ounces of water.
  • Midmorning: Drink a “green drink,” a dried formula of several green vegetables (see glossary), with 8 ounces of distilled water.
  • Lunch: Take one digestive enzyme capsule, then drink one cup of fresh vegetable juice (choose mostly green vegetables) and herbal cleansing formula with 8 ounces of distilled water.
  • Midafternoon: Drink 8 ounces of water, a green drink, 8 ounces of herbal tea (lemon and stevia optional). Drink another berry drink.
  • Evening: Take an enzyme capsule, drink one cup of cleansing soup, one cup of broth from cleansing soup mix, a cup of herbal tea, herbal cleansing formula and 8 ounces of water.
  • Later: Another herbal tea or water.
  • Bedtime: Aloe vera, a nutritional supplement.”You’re going to find out very quickly when you drink that amount of nutrition, you are going to feel energetic, get more clarity, and you are going to want to do this longer than a weekend,” says the once-sickly DeLuz,who swears her detox program saved her life and helped her shed 50 pounds. But at the end of the fast, she says, don’t return to processed, unhealthy foods. Continue drinking the nutritious drinks, eating whole foods and drinking lots of water.Co-author James Hester says he uses the weekend cleanse when his pants get a little snug. Besides the two-day fast, DeLuz also offers seven-day and 21-day cleanse programs.

“Do this with friends,” Hester says. “It feels like a game, a competition. The first two or three days are the hardest, but once you pass the two-day hump, you’ll want to keep going.”

    Glossary

  • Antioxidant berry drink: A dried blend of berries that is equivalent to 1 1/2 pounds of berries. Purchase at any health food store or online at mvdiet detox.com.
  • Green drink: These dried green powders, mixed with distilled water, provide the same amount of nutrition as eating eight to 10 servings of green vegetables. Purchase at health food stores or order DeLuz’s preferred brand at mvdietdetox.com.
  • Cleansing soup: Cook a variety of your choice of fresh, organic vegetables such as greens, carrots, broccoli, cabbage. Puree the soup in a blender and drink it.
  • Herbal cleaning formula: Buy pills that contain herbs such as cascara sagrada, black cohosh, burdock powder, psyllium seed husk, beet fiber from a health food store.
  • Broth: The juice from the cleansing soup.
  • Digestive enzymes: These are like “Pac-Man,” going through the body eating up foreign substances. Purchased them at a health food store. Digestive enzymes should contain protease, amylase, lipase, cellulose. They help reduce bloating and effects of food allergies. Take these before drinking your vegetable juice and soup.
  • Colonic: Colon hydrotherapy is a way of cleansing the colon. It softens the stool, cleans the colon walls and flushes out toxins.
The day after your fast: It’s important to continue drinking fresh juice, cleansing soups, broth and supplements for at least one or two more days. Eat only healthy foods without chemicals and toxins. Chew well, stay hydrated by drinking 48 to 64 ounces of water daily.

  • Fashion Masochist: Liquid Detox

Boston MagazineThe authors of the new Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox book promise “purification of body and soul” and dramatic weight loss by the glass. Rachel Baker takes the plunge.

The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox (2007), by Roni DeLuz and James Hester. This all-liquid cleanse is designed to shed excess pounds and eliminate toxins.

The Pitch: Developed at her Vineyard Haven holistic retreat, Roni DeLuz’s drinkable diet aims to rid the body of toxins that can result in bloating, bad skin, and fatigue. (Dropping pounds is just a bonus.)

The Experience: DeLuz has been preaching her regimen to high-profile clients like publishing queen Judith Regan since 1997. Her new book, 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox, takes readers through three weeks of liquid nutrition, and includes recipes for “delectable” puréed juice and soups made of green vegetables like kale and broccoli. For those who don’t cook—or own a blender—DeLuz offers a $200 kit containing tubs of powdered veggie mix, protein shake mix, and “Inner Cleanse” herbal tablets. I opt for the prepackaged stuff. “Congratulations!” says Dr. Roni (as her clients call her). “Your body is going to love you!”

A usual day calls for four “green drinks,” which taste like watered-down popsicles. For the first few days I feel peaked, but determined. Talking about it helps. My grandfather, a Mississippi egg farmer who subsists on a sturdy diet of fried cheese and cigars, thinks it’s a great idea, and likens my detox to molting, the process by which hens are deprived of food to improve their egg output. Never mind that they lose their feathers in the bargain.

By day four, I’m nauseated and hungry. I barely make it out of bed, except to vomit. Dr. Roni says the vomiting isn’t typical, and adds that I must be “highly toxic.” “Your body is just going to love you after you get those toxins out!” she repeats cheerily, then allows me a bottle of fruit juice (I have two) as well as one mashed-up banana (I eat four). She forbids me to chew: “Chewing would rev up your resting organs,” which apparently is bad. The book, for its part, tells dieters experiencing a “healing crisis” to sip water or have a protein shake. Meanwhile, I’ve lost a measly 2 pounds.

But the next morning—day five—I wake up feeling clearheaded and enthusiastic. Suddenly, it’s as if I could detox forever. But do I want to? I spend the weekend couched, and by Sunday I’ve lost 5 pounds. I’m also missing my less healthy, more fun life.

The Verdict: By day eight, I’m ready to ease back onto solid food and into society. I’ll try again the next time I’ve got 21 days to idle away on a Vineyard Haven beach. Until then, I’ve got some chewing to do.

    Eat your way to detox
An all-over body makeover uses a simple principle
    BY NICOLE LYN PESCE
    New York Daily News

Ah, a beach-ready bod in three weeks.

That’s the promise of the Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet: losing a pound a day by flushing all harmful toxins away. And now New Yorkers without the time or money to escape to Dr. Roni DeLuz’s holistic retreat can follow her program at home with her new book, “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet,” co-authored with James Hester, a former client.

Devotees of this cleansing process feed themselves every two hours with drinks mixed with supplements and enzymes, plus herbal teas, distilled water and vegetable purees, which whisk away nasty substances like artificial flavors, preservatives and air pollutants. Ridding your body of harmful substances, says DeLuz, is the best way to boost energy, improve overall health and shed pounds. “You’ll see better skin, better hair, better nails, it’s unbelievable!” she says. “And if your body is healing and repairing itself at the same time, then it’s not afraid to let go of extra weight.”

Yet detoxing shouldn’t be confused with dieting. “With most diets, you’re limiting yourself: your calories, or the type of foods that you will eat. Some concentrate on carbs, some concentrate on just protein, but still you’re limiting your body with some particular nutrient,” she says. “The whole principle behind detoxing is maximum nutrition in small doses.” Sipping one of her berry drinks has the same nutritional value as eating five to six servings of fruit. Co-author Hester, a former music executive, found living Manhattan’s rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle was taking a toll on his health. “Premieres every night and parties, plus eating greasy food late and then going to bed,” he recalls. Although skeptical of detox at first, he was eager to lose the pounds he’d packed on after leaving his high-profile job. “It completely changed my life: mind, body and spirit,” he says. “My skin got clearer and my thinking got clearer.” He dropped from 203 to 182 pounds, and has kept the weight off for four years.

Maintaining your improved physique after completing the treatment is as easy as devoting two days out of your week to eating solely cleansing foods, such as the vegetable soups and purees, particularly from green vegetables like spinach, kale and cucumbers. “You can choose to make it your own plan,” DeLuz says. “The whole point is to make better choices - it’s the only way you’re going to stay healthy and keep your weight down.

“As much as I love New York, we all know it’s a very toxic place,” she says. “It’s so congested, and there are fast-food places everywhere.” The key to keeping healthy in a city packed with so many toxins and temptations is to be educated and make smart decisions. “You can walk down a New York street and pick grapes rather than going inside and picking French fries,” she says. “And there are great juice bars everywhere.”

    1 cup any other greens
    1/2 cup green beans, chopped
    1 teaspoon Asian chili sauce
Combine water, garlic, Bragg’s and fresh ginger in a large saucepan. Add cut-up vegetables. Boil over high heat until tender. Pour roughly 1/4 cup of broth into a blender (add more for thicker soup), along with all of the vegetables and chili sauce. Puree and eat the soup. Drink the remaining broth.

    Eat your way to detox

That the authors of “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox” are planning to “detox” island cops, teachers, a pastor and the owner of the Vineyard Haven landmark Art Cliff Diner to promote their book that hits the shelves in May. The writers Roni DeLuz and James Hester, say the diet will flush toxins - and pounds - in just three weeks.

New York Magazine–Judith Regan Even Bitches Have Feelings..

New York MagazineJudith Regan loves to fast. She likes the high you get, the way it makes you feel clear, intuitive, even telepathic, transforming your skin into a baby’s and launching your energy level into the stratosphere. Says Natalia Rose, Upper East Side detoxing guru,, “She loves eating really clean. When I tell her my big picture of how I want everyone to understand their connection to the light, and by healing each other we heal the world, she totally believes that.”

The first week of November, Regan and a couple of the women in her office started a 21-day fast, so through all of the O.J. madness, the only nutrition she had every day was an infusion of berry drinks, enzyme shots, hot tea, live juice, and a once-a-day treat of soup—a mélange of carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach puréed in the Cuisinart. She was not allowed to chew—anything. Every night at 10 p.m., she drank a foul-tasting shot of aloe and made a hot tea before she went to bed.

She flew down to Miami for the taping of the show with her nutrition coach, James Hester, co-author with Roni DeLuz of 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox.

Oh frappe! Vineyard diet pushes liquids. No chewing, please

The goals are to eat healthy — and cleanse the body
VERY VEGGIE Roni DeLuz (with James Hester) says most people can lose about a pound a day .

By Kate M. Jackson, Globe Correspondent | May 3, 2007

Martha's Vineyard Diet DetoxDetox diets have been all the rage lately, adopted by celebrities, soccer moms, and more than a few people in between. Now a new detox diet — developed on Martha’s Vineyard by Roni DeLuz — is starting to generate buzz of its own.

The regimen, outlined in DeLuz’s forthcoming book, “21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox,” relies on vitamin-rich juices, thick vegetable purees, and herbal teas. Also on the menu: nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes to keep the body’s systems stable and cells nourished during the cleanse.

While no solid food is allowed and chewing is prohibited, DeLuz does recommend colonics, coffee enemas, and lymphatic massages to help eliminate toxins. To the diet’s devotees, that’s a fair trade.

“It takes about 21 days for a body to naturally cleanse its major organs, and on this program most people can lose about a pound a day,” said DeLuz. As founder and director of the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat at the Martha’s Vineyard Inn , she has been quietly detoxing guests with her program for years.

“This program was developed specifically as a detox,” she added, “as a way to nourish the body, and change the way people think about food. The weight loss is simply a bonus.”

It was quite a bonus to James Hester, a former music publisher who came to the Vineyard in 2003 irritable and overweight.

“I had three chins and weighed about 213 pounds where I am normally 175 or 180,” Hester said. “I was angry and had been using food as a way to manage my emotions.”

After losing 21 pounds on DeLuz’s program, Hester had something of a spiritual awakening. “I realized I was not only cleansing my body but my emotions as well,” he says.

Hester moved to the Vineyard to work with DeLuz full- time and implored her to share the detox program that changed his life with the rest of the world. Their book, published by HarperCollins, hits shelves on Tuesday . Unlike traditional diets, the main goal of any detox diet is to cleanse the body of toxins that have accumulated over time. Many people report clearer skin, increased energy, and improved health in addition to rapid weight loss.

Still, some are skeptical about the long-term benefits of such cleanses. Many people start a detox after long indulging in an unhealthy diet high in sugar and processed foods, according to Peter Pressman, a diet expert with the Institute of Food Technologists in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“People undoubtedly feel better when they simplify their regimen and have adequate hydration,” he says. “In the short term you’re going to feel wonderful. The question is what happens over the long term. Commonly conceived, detox diets are without scientific or clinical merit as a safe approach to weight management.” That hasn’t deterred true believers like Lauren Horton, 51, who completed her first Martha’s Vineyard detox three years ago after having breast cancer surgery.

“I’d never done a cleanse before but I just felt like I needed to detoxify my body,” said Horton, who was about 35 pounds overweight at the time. “The first two days were really hard. I didn’t have any sugar or coffee as I usually do and had a pretty bad withdrawal headache.

“Also the social and psychological aspects of not chewing were a little strange. But by day three, I’d lost five pounds and no longer felt hungry. I was so encouraged by that positive reinforcement that it made it easy to go the distance,” she said. Horton lost 20 pounds on the diet.

The most important thing she says she learned from the Vineyard program was how to choose foods that really nourish her. She often does “mini cleanses,” detoxing for a few days at a time and incorporating parts of the diet, like the fresh juices, into her daily menu.

One of the tenets of the Martha’s Vineyard diet is its flexibility, DeLuz says.

“You can follow it to a T, but even mini-cleanses here and there help. Put away the potato chips and Diet Coke for a weekend. Have some berries. Drink some green juice. Even if you eat just one meal a day of cleansing foods you’re going to notice a healthy change.”

These are Dr. Roni’s 1st and 2nd “At Home Graduates” - Maurice M. and Rosalie F.

My Name is Maurice M. but everyone calls me Ishmael. I ordered the Home program because I have three young children which don’t permit me the time to visit you at Martha?s Vineyard. I started the program two months ago and since then I have lost 45 pounds. The program really gave me a jump start to wanting to eat and maintain a healthy life style. Before I started the program, I was 100 lbs overweight and suffering from Hypertension extremely bad, Now my hypertension is within normal range consistently. I still have 55 more pounds to go but what a difference 45 pounds make, when it’s not on your body. What motivated me to get the program was my three young daughters who I want to see grow up, my mother who had three strokes and told me not to be a burden on my children and wife by having strokes like she had from poor diet and a lack of exercise. Finally, I did it for myself because it was time to stop talking about it and start doing something about it. However, what pushed me over the edge was definitely the article in sister to sister magazine which my wife subscribes to, the power of print media. Since the initial 21 day detox , I have now given up red meat completely accept for lamb during the Passover, Chicken and fish I eat only occasionally. I have also eliminated all fast foods from my diet. I have been on a 7 day live foods diet, which was great because it flushed a lot of mucus from my system. The program is great but if you are going to do it on your own ,you must have the support of your family and the discipline to stick to the program because you can be easily tempted.

Dear Dr. Roni, I could never thank you enough for helping me live a healthier, happier life. Several months ago I was overweight, ashamed, and miserable. I could feel that the weight gain was taking a toll on me physically. I read Jamie Foster Brown’s experience in Sister 2 Sister Magazine and thought I’d give it a try. I am so glad I did because I have lost 18 pounds! My Mother is also doing the program with me and has lost 20 pounds. Thank you so much Dr. Roni for developingn a program that allows the body to eliminate toxins and unwanted weight without having to purchased prepared foods, take over the counter drugs, and spend grueling hours at the gym - most of the time with little to no results. I love that this a natural way for the body to lose weight…and it’s safe. I am so pleased with the results and I will stay committed to the program so that I can continue to live a healthier, happier life. God Bless you Dr. Roni.

    Dear Dr. Roni,
I would like to thank you for the most memorable and blessed experience I have had in a long time. When I checked into the retreat I was 286 pounds. After spending 21 days with you, I lost 40 pounds. I would never believe that I could lose 40 pounds in 21 days. As you know when I walked in I could barely make it up a flight of stairs without taking a break. I was once the fastest lineman in the NFL playing with the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. I’m back in shape eating the right foods and cutting out sugar in my diet. It’s been 3 months since I completed your detox program and I’ve never looked or felt better since many years of playing football. Oh, by the way I have been ordering the supplements and I love them; I don’t miss a day. You have changed my life and will never forget my experience with you. May god Bless You!!! ”
    Roy F. Simmons.

    Dear Roni,
I had such a wonderful time at the inn last time; a much needed rest, plus where else do you get the bonus of losing 10 pounds in just 6 days practically painlessly and without ever being hungry. It gave me a great start to getting back on a healthy track (the liver detox really helped too). Again, thanks for all you good advice, Warmly”

    Well Doc,
I spent 10 days with you and lost 10 pounds. Even though I am one of your few patients who elected to eat salads and fruits and didn’t chose to do colonic’s, I still lost sixteen pounds and I feel and look phenomenal. At 69 years of age, and 186 lbs I feel like I am 50 years old again.

    Best Regards,
    Jim Hester

I came to Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat with mercury poisoning. As I fasted the 1st week I had a bad rash, a runny nose, itchy skin and my nipples burned continually. During the first week I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. One the 8th day, and everyday thereafter, I awoke with clear skin, bright eyes and an overwhelming erg to take a very long walk. I had turned the corner… I arrived home with a significant change im my body composition and 15 lbs lighter.

    Lynette Brown

    Dr Roni,

I have learned so much since coming to the retreat. During the 7 day fast I lost 8 pounds at the retreat and 2 more when I came home. I came to the retreat weighing 134 pounds and now I am steadily holding at 125. Through Dr. Roni’s guidance I have learned a lifestyle of healthy eating. When I reached my early thirties my metabolism began slowing down and I began gaining weight even though I hadn’t changed my regular exercise or eating habits. I was stuck at 134 pounds. Dr. Roni passed on the knowledge I carved to become the healthiest person I can be. Now I am making my own juice for myself and family as well as watching out for foods I didn’t realize were bad for us. I am healthier, more energetic, and more confident than I have ever been. Thanks! Sincerely,

    Wendi Graves

June 21, 2007 — WE may see a lot less of Jimmy Fallon in the future. The former “Saturday Night Live” comic told Roni DeLuz, who with Jimmy Hester has co-authored “The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox,” that he’s thinking about trying the slim-down plan after seeing Howard Stern sidekick Robin Quivers lose 20 pounds in 15 days. DeLuz said Fallon’s only concern was not wanting to do the recommended colonics part of the detox. She told him while it would be good for him, it wasn’t necessary.
